'Tis the Season to Color! Starbucks Unveils 2017 Holiday Cups

01 November 2017

And, perfectly on cue, Starbucks has unveiled its annual red holiday cups-except there's one problem. Instead, they're white with red accents.

"This year's cup is intentionally created to encourage our customers to add their own color and illustrations", said Leanne Fremar, executive creative director for Starbucks, in a statement.

While we're keeping our fingers crossed that we too will be able to add personal touches to our cups of toffee nut latte this year, Starbucks hasn't yet revealed the UK's holiday cups, or confirmed when they will launch.

"I liked the idea of hands as the centring point, a symbol of connection, love and giving joy", Jordan Kay from Starbucks Creative Studio explained in a statement from the brand.

For the first time, the design isn't red.

And nothing signals the start of the holiday season quite like the new Starbucks holiday cup - which, in fact, is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Starting November 1, Starbucks stores in the United States and Canada will serve beverages in the new holiday cups, including returning favorites such as Chestnut Praline Latte, Caramel Brulée Latte and Peppermint Mocha.

For the highly anticipated red cup this year, Starbucks went with a festive and somewhat minimal design that features stars, doves, presents, hands holding, a heart, snowflakes, and a Christmas tree. It picked 13 different designs from six countries that were submitted via Instagram. In 2015, the coffee giant faced backlash when it debuted minimalist red cups that some complained weren't "Christmas-y" enough.
