Attorneys for embattled Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens asserted Thursday the prosecutor in his juvenile invasion of privacy trial concealed evidence until following the release of some legislative committee report that contributed to calls to its Republican to step down. On more than one occasion the woman was reduced to tears.
A House committee report says Greitens' ex-mistress did not give him permission to rip her shirt open or pull her trousers down during a 2015 sexual meeting.
The girl, identified only as "K.S., " advised lawmakers who Greitens took a partially nude image of her after tying her to practice equipment and then ripping off apparel which he'd made her change into for what she initially thought would be "alluring workout" The so-called photo led to Greitens' February indictment with way of a St. Louis grand jury".
The committee was on a fact-finding mission regarding Greitens' affair with his St. Louis-based hairdresser and a tape made available to KMOVregarding an incident where he allegedly takes a picture of her without her consent and uses it to ensure her silence.
Beyond disturbing - that's how Missouri's Republican House speaker described allegations against the state's governor.
Fox joins a chorus of Republican leaders who have called on Greitens, who is Jewish, to resign.
The defense accused Gardner of withholding evidence and said it would ask for sanctions against Gardner and seek to depose the woman and her ex-husband again.
The report comprised testimony from a female who claimed the governor slapped, grabbed, pushed and jeopardized throughout undesirable sexual meetings in 2015, a year earlier he was chosen. The report says the committee does not have any photo nor any evidence that such a photo was transmitted, which is a key part of the felony charge Greitens faces.
Rep. Judy Morgan, a Kansas City Democrat, told KCUR that she was disturbed by "the interaction between the two of them, which appeared to be sexual abuse on his part". "If he's nonetheless the governor he can have some supporters and Josh Hawley would have often known as for his resignation and impeachment and doubtless you'd have a fissure throughout the Republican residents that will very effectively be problematic".
"We have proof that Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner and her team hid evidence from the people of Missouri and from the Missouri House of Representatives - evidence that undermined the narrative pushed in the House report", Greitens said in a statement on Facebook.
Matt Brooks, the executive director of the Republican Jewish Committee, did not respond to requests for comment. But U.S. Rep. Vicki Hartzler had strong language, saying the report "surpasses disturbing".
From Greitens' initial statement to the release of the indictment, read the Post-Dispatch coverage of the governor's scandal.
The report detailed the victim's testimony that Greitens slapped her and called her a whore during one particular encounter.
If the governor is cleared in his criminal trial, McCann Beatty says the decision would not stop the legislature from taking action against Greitens. There is a partial gag order in that trial. Democrats have been running TV ads linking Greitens to Hawley. Greitens was fined by the Missouri Ethics Commission in 2017 for not reporting that he obtained an email list from the charity during his gubernatorial campaign.
Greitens said at Wednesday's news conference that the committee "decided to publish an incomplete document", adding that it'll be "filled with lies that may have come from a dream".
Eric Greitens is pictured weeks, in January until he was indicted on felony invasion-of-privacy Fees. Brian Ellison is host of KCUR's Statehouse Blend Missouri podcast and reports on Missouri politics and government.
