Man City wins Premier League after United loses to West Brom

15 April 2018

It's been nearly inevitable for the whole of 2018 but Manchester City have today sealed the Premier League title without even kicking a ball on Sunday afternoon.

Because of goal difference, United realistically needed to win all of their six remaining games and hope City lost their last five matches.

Guardiola has won the League Cup already for City this season but a first Premier League title, to go with the three La Liga titles he won as manager of Barcelona and the three Bundesliga titles he delivered for Bayern Munich, will be particularly satisfying for the Spaniard.

West Brom's director of football, Richard Garlick, said: "Everyone at the club is delighted for Jay because this has been a trying period for him".

Nacer Chadli and Sam Field are in contention, having played for the under-23 side earlier this week, while Daniel Sturridge is also available. Of those three Baggies wins, two came at Old Trafford: 2-1 in September 2013 and 1-0 in May 2015. Match Facts Manchester United Manchester United have 71 points, which is already the most the Red Devils have managed across a single season since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

It means the Baggies striker escapes a five-match ban for racial abuse, although the FA stressed the complaint made by Bong was in "absolute good faith". The Spaniard has accumulated 16 clean sheets in the Premier League and will be looking to add another one, as he chases his first Golden Glove award.

Ben Foster comfortably stopped a hopeful long-range Paul Pogba attempt and raced off his line to thwart former West Brom team-mate Romelu Lukaku, but the ex-United goalkeeper was fortunate not to be facing a penalty in the 18th minute.

However, West Brom pulled out of the deal at the last minute when they chose to loan Gregorz Krychowiak from PSG. Languishing bottom of the league - with just 21 points, Alan Pardew's side are hte favourites to face relegation.

Someone text Pep Guardiola the news because the Manchester City manager is somewhere on a golf course blissfully unaware that his side are Premier League champions for just the third time.
