Commonwealth Games: England stun Australia to take last-gasp netball gold

16 April 2018

India has bagged 26 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals during its Commonwealth games campaign in Gold Coast, Australia.

Kyron McMaster brought some well-needed joy to the British Virgin Islands by winning its first Commonwealth Games medal in the 400 meters hurdles just six months after Hurricane Irma devastated the tiny nation and killed his coach. The last thing they want is to stand in a field for an hour waiting to get into a closing ceremony.

"It has been an honour to support these unbelievable Canadian athletes here in Gold Coast", said Claire Carver-Dias, Canada's Chef de Mission. "I thought it was 50-50 bout", Amit said after his loss. "The pool is deep". Participants and visitors also appreciated the attractive locale that is the Gold Coast - and the beaches, surf and sand did not disappoint.

However, this won't beat India's second-best haul of 69 medals in Manchester in 2002.

In table tennis, it was a memorable Games for Manika Batra as she picked up medals in all events she competed in - Singles Gold, Women's Doubles Gold, Women's Team Gold and rounding off the Games with Mixed Doubles Bronze. Her maiden CWG singles gold came at the 2010 Games in New Delhi.

LePage, 22, won silver in the decathlon, while defending champion and Canadian teammate Damian Warner faltered. "I've never seen the stadium so empty", she said. "It's something you'll always remember".

"I wish all of the girls could have "Commonwealth Games winner" on their CV", Hosking said.

Once again, people are really mad at the Commonwealth Games organisers.

Closing ceremonies of Olympic and Commonwealth Games are usually much more relaxed than formal openings, focusing on the athletes and celebrating their achievements.

With lots of traditional music and dance, that showcased the vibrant and unique culture of Queensland and Australia, Gold Coast celebrated the successful completion of the region's biggest sporting extravaganza that they hoped would put their state on the world stage.

The Games also featured their first transgender athlete, and gay English diver Tom Daley caused a stir when he urged the 37 Commonwealth countries that outlaw homosexuality to change their laws.

"The secret to my success is my fitness and I am very quick".

There were five medals in the shooting, while Gareth Evans won gold in the men's -69kg weightlifting and teenage gymnast Latalia Bevan was a surprise silver medallist on the floor.

Gold medalist, Odunayo Adekuoroye clinched first gold for the country in the women's wrestling freestyle 57kg after defeating India's Pooja Dhanda with a 7-5 victory by points.

And as Wiebe, Masse, Ruck, LePage, and the rest of their Team Canada teammates illustrated, it seems like mission accomplished.
