Morgan's still not right: Somehow the sight of former Savior prisoners coming back to the Hilltop from a zombie-killing run got Morgan so worked up that he almost put his bo staff through young Henry's neck.
Gilliam spoke about the importance of tackling faith on The Walking Dead, something his character, Gabriel Stokes, does quite a lot on the show, especially since he's a priest. With a bloody busted hand, Negan ran for cover and duck behind a tree - the very same tree with the hanging stained glass panels that we saw Rick sitting beneath in the closing moments of the midseason finale.
The Saviors did indeed look to have the upper hand as they suddenly appeared over a rise, outnumbering Rick's group. And fans that have really enjoyed seeing Negan were concerned that he might die too. It's still somewhat-strange that the character has been kept alive, and it really just seems to be a way in which for him to continue to abuse him every step of the way.
So what now does Negan offer?
Gimple has been emphasizing a "very, very different" world in Season 9, although there's no confirmation of a major time jump, as there is at this point in Kirkman's comic book.
Let's just say that with one move, Eugene redeemed himself for a full season of terribleness. Following on from his tactical advantage the previous week, the baseball bat-wielding maniac had his opponents surrounded, only for a rug-pull to reveal Eugene had made faulty ammo. And compared to Carl's untimely death midway through what's been a problematic season, the idea that the show would kill off a character many viewers are growing exhausted of, Negan's death made some handsome sense - but not for long. It's hard to know what the future will hold for him, as his comic self died when the zombie horde overran Alexandria. There was a real change at peace between all of the communities for a change, which is certainly exciting - yet, also something that is probably an ideal that can never completely come to pass.
He then told the surviving Saviors, "We're all gonna go home now". Here are a few things we learned from four of the actors. In the comic, Rick does jail Negan as a sign of doing things differently, and Hilltop leader Maggie does feel betrayed by that decision, since she wants revenge for Negan Lucille-ing Glenn. She wants the community to thrive for the people. Is this the beginning of Maggie going to the dark side?
Rick now seems committed to this new world and new vision. Earlier episodes this season already began laying the groundwork for this daring new direction (see the addition of Georgie), and following the events of the season 8 finale, the series is now free to explore these new ideas.
"It looks like that to me", executive producer Scott Gimple told Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick when asked if Team Family is headed for a civil war plot come season 9.
Introducing new characters like those offering "The Knowledge", Jadis and the Scavengers' entire story arc, and the death of Carl, added an air of unpredictability at least to the second half of season 8, but it wasn't enough. Leave us a comment in the box below with your thoughts.
