Earlier this week, federal safety agencies reported that McDonald's customers in IL and Iowa experienced serious illness thanks to a foodborne parasite that contaminated the fast food chain's salads.
The illnesses began around May 1, where cases of cyclospora began being reported across the US.
McDonald's now says it is currently looking for a new salad provider. People fall ill an average of seven days after eating the food contaminated with fecal matter. At least three people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.
The number of people sickened by tainted McDonald's salads has jumped to 163 in 10 states.
"The additional states identified by the FDA and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) are among the same states where a week ago we proactively chose to remove our lettuce blend in impacted restaurants and replace it through a different supplier", McDonald's said Friday in a statement.
The FDA has not identified which of the ingredients in either the McDonald's salads or the Del Monte trays is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays and salads is under consideration.Читайте также: Eleven taxi drivers killed as gunmen storm minibus in South Africa
McDonald's said in a statement Friday that it already voluntarily removed lettuce blends from the additional states identified Friday replaced them with vegetables from a different supplier.
"We are closely monitoring this situation and cooperating with state and federal health authorities as they further investigate", McDonald's said in a statement.
Cyclospora cayetanensis (cyclospora) is a parasite composed of a single cell, too small to be seen without a microscope.
Cyclosporiasis is a non-fatal infection and the most common symptom is watery diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This parasite, when it contaminates food or water and is then ingested, can cause an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. Those infected can experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may be noted. "Therefore, it is unlikely that Cyclospora is passed directly from one person to another". The sickness can last for up to a month if left untreated, much longer than those suffering from E. coli poisoning.
A week ago, the FDA reported there were 61 illnesses in seven states, majority in IL. "Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
