Still no sign of Sam Darnold.
While multiple reports suggested the delay in signing was largely related to language regarding "offsets" - meaning the Jets wouldn't be on the hook for Darnold's full contract if he is cut and signs with a new team - WFAN's Brian Costello reported that QB had actually agreed to the offsets before training camp.
Just a few minutes after the Jets announced the signing -which includes a signing bonus of about $20 million - on social media, Darnold made his way out to the practice field with his teammates greeting him with a "Rudy"-like slow-clap". Video of the slow-clap reception started trending on Twitter. Darnold took his place with the quarterbacks and was greeted by incumbent starter Josh McCown, who shook the rookie's hand and gave him a playful head slap.
The Sam Darnold dispute with the Jets was one of the more absurd disputes we've seen in quite some time, with NY potentially alienating the No. 3 overall pick over contractual language that, given what they've invested in Darnold, seemed simply nonsensical. "It looked like the first day of camp".
The delay in signing a contract that already had a predetermined amount was due to both sides negotiating over clauses and the deal's language.
Offsets language - which would provide the team financial protection if it cut Darnold at any point in the first three years of his four-year rookie deal - was the core issue of the contract impasse with CAA agent Jimmy Sexton. The bigger issue for him was contract language.
Get ready, the era of Sam Darnold is about to begin. The new rule says a player can't lower his head to make contact with an opponent, and with questions as to how the rule will be enforced, Smith wants assurances the teams won't take away some of his guaranteed money if he is suspended.
Jets coach Todd Bowles discussed Darnold's absence and the team's competition at quarterback earlier this weekend.
Left tackle Garett Bolles and inside linebacker Brandon Marshall were among the casualties Monday. Bell reminisced about his time as a rookie in the National Basketball Association, including the lessons that he learned over time and, perhaps just as importantly, the value of practice and training camps.
The team said Cockrell will need surgery, but has not said if he is expected to miss the remainder of the season. The Panthers have not said if Williams will have surgery or if he will try to recover without it.
Blount declined interview requests Monday.
"Of course I'm disappointed", said 24-year-old Kelly Stickle, a New Jersey resident wearing a No. 28 Curtis Martin jersey.
HALL OF FAME: Despite his decision to not attend Saturday's Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, Terrell Owens will be "honored" by the hall for his NFL career.
