Samsung finally got carriers to agree on same price for Note 9

The 6.4-inch bezel-to-bezel "Infinity Display" does not feature an in-display fingerprint sensor contrary to earlier reports, although the top and bottom bezels are slightly narrower than before. Samsung offers a version of the Note 9 with 8GB but Tom's Guide tests were conducted on the 6GB version. Coupled with a more efficient processor than last year's model, the Note 9 could shape up to have some of the best battery life of a smartphone this year.

The entry-level edition comes with 128GB but if that isn't enough, there's a 512GB contender too. As ever there's microSD support for cards up to 512GB in size, meaning you can have up to 1TB of storage if you buy the bigger variant.

The firm added that its proprietary CPU (central processing unit) was 33% faster than before.

To get the Galaxy skin in Fortnite, you need to play the game on Android, on a Samsung device - specifically a Samsung Galaxy device - and two of the newest, most expensive devices at that. However, the Note 9 teardown is already out, giving us a glimpse of the internals and the inner workings of the phablet. As with the S9 it has the variable dual-aperture system (f/1.5 and f/2.4) created to mimic the human eye, a 2x optical zoom on the secondary lens, and a dual-pixel sensor for super slow-mo video recording. This transforms it from a simple digital pen to a full-fletch remote control that can be used to interact with some of the Note 9's key features, like the phone's A.I. powered camera. It can detect if someone screws up your picture, and notifies you so you can have another go.

Auto Scene Optimization is also in hand, and this works on the same principle as scene recognition modes on other smartphones and cameras, first identifying subjects before deciding on a category and adjusting parameters such as contrast, brightness and saturation to suit. When the Note first came out, the S Pen was really only useful for swipe typing, doodling and writing quick notes. But that's not all. You'll be able to use the pen as a presentation clicker, long-press to launch an app of your choice, and set specific actions inside each app. Borrowing from the iPhone's playbook, the Note 9 will have the same US price regardless of carrier.

For professionals and enterprise users, the Note can run in DeX mode via just an HDMI cable, rather than requiring a hefty proprietary dock, as before. There's no word on United Kingdom pricing, but those dongles are $50 (£39) in the States. The latter approach is the wiser choice; to make consumers dependent on something, you have to make it effortless for them to use. Granted, most carriers and retailers are running promotions for the Note 9, but not a single one directly impacts the starting price of the device.
