The Senators trade Erik Karlsson to the Sharks

14 September 2018

Dean Brown: "Sens also get a 2nd rd pick in 2021".

Nearing the start of training camp, discussions have intensified, with the San Jose Sharks surprisingly making an enormous push for the former All-Star.

A deal has been rumoured for months after Karlsson did not sign an extension offer from the Senators over the summer.

Thanks for all the great feedback yesterday on Boston. As I said before, I wanted to try something outside the box with these and tailor them towards what I know you all come here for.rumors and player movement. As I do more of them I believe you will start to see how these "Value Rankings" (need a better name) play into the path teams are taking. They are huge clues in this National Hockey League puzzle. "We felt that now is the time to trade Erik Karlsson".

With the season right around the corner, this deal could be finished soon.

"This has been in the works for awhile. We talked to multiple teams around draft time and after (July 1) trade talks heated up", he said. "We didn't feel (in July) we were getting the return for an Erik Karlsson-type of player".

Dorion admitted the decision to rebuild was made in February, yet during town hall meetings with fans in April said, "at the end of the day it will be (Karlsson's) choice".

An emotional Karlsson said even though there had been no shortage of speculation, the deal still caught him off guard. "I wish we were standing here during different circumstances. Its an unfortunate part of the business". "As you said, there's been a lot of noise for nearly a year now, but I never in my wildest imagination thought that I was going to leave this place".

"I was prepared to come here and work hard for this team". Wearing shorts and flip-flops all year round doesn't sound like a bad way to live if you ask me.

Karlsson scored nine goals (his lowest full-season total) and registered 53 assists for 62 points in 71 games in 2017-18.

The team struggled last season and many supporters on the streets of downtown Ottawa on Thursday said it was a clear sign that a rebuild is necessary - which means it was also time for a high-priced player like Karlsson to move on.

The comparisons to Alfredsson's departure for the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent in July 2013 are inevitable because Karlsson has roots in the community. "It's always going to be my home and it's always going to be a community that I'm going to be as much involved in as I possibly can and give back in whatever way that I can". It's been happening really fast. "Even though there's been a lot of noise for nearly a year now, I never thought in my wildest imagination I was going to leave this place".

Karlsson had spent his entire career with the Senators since being drafted by the organization in 2008, 15th overall.

"As of right now, it is really emotional and a sad, sad moment", the two-time Norris Trophy victor explained.
