Twitter reported that the number of mDAUs in the US-its core market-grew by 5% year over year to an average of 27 million in Q4 2018. The short-messaging platform said it posted a $255m profit in the final three months of 2018, compared with $91m a year earlier, AFP reported.
Looking ahead, Twitter expects total revenue for Q1 2019 to be between $715 million and $775 million.
Twitter said the decline was partly due to its efforts to identify trolls and take down malicious accounts.
Twitter's numbers here did not go over well, even though it did beat analysts expectations.
Revenue grew 24 percent to $909 million.
Profits of $255m (£196m) were 180% higher than in October to December 2017.
"2018 is proof that our long-term strategy is working".
Heading into Thursday, Twitter had routinely shared the percentage growth of its daily user base each quarter without sharing the actual number of DAUs on its platform.
"Twitter's Q4 earnings may have met with mixed reactions from the market, but they are a clear sign that the work Twitter has been putting in to cleaning up toxicity in its environment is paying off", Ben-Itzhak said. But, CEO Jack Dorsey said during a livestream Q&A back in March that the health of the platform was his priority.
Monthly active users totalled 321 million.
In its earnings release, Twitter was quick to note that the new user disclosures will not impact its relationship with advertisers or the information they get before deciding to advertise on the social network. And the platform is clearly putting quality not quantity at the heart of its future growth plans. Twitter said that after the current quarter it would stop disclosing monthly active users, a statistic that has become standard among internet companies over the last decade. So, starting this quarter, in addition to sharing the growth in mDAU as we have since 2016, we are disclosing the absolute number of average mDAU (previously referred to as DAU), for both the United States and global markets.
In its letter to investors, Twitter also said it was experimenting with "changes that would make Twitter feel more like chat".
"We have continuing concerns about users and growth", said Scott Kessler of the research firm CFRA.
For the first time, we now have an idea of the number of monetizable Twitter daily users; that is, the number of people who log in to Twitter each day and potentially view an advertisement.
More than half of Twitter's ad revenues came from clients buying video slots. "Marketing teams focusing on lucrative demographics overseas understand the key opinion leaders, sales days and payment methods that drive quick conversions and build brand loyalty".
Twitter is anticipating total revenue for Q1 2019 to be between US$715 million and US$775 million, with an operating income of US$5 million to US$35 million - far below the $74.9 million income, it posted during the same period past year.
Twitter will continue to disclose their daily active user count but will no longer provide data on monthly numbers. While it's a safe bet that Twitter lost some fed-up users, the decrease could also be attributed to Twitter's ongoing purge of bots and fake companies.
