Verizon to launch mobile 5G in Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11

14 March 2019

Verizon will launch its 5G Ultra Wideband service in select areas in Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11. For an extra $10 month on top of typical Verizon unlimited plans, you'll have unlimited 5G data.

Verizon sidestepped one of the main challenges to 5G introduction - the absence of 5G phones - by offering an adaptation.

"To buy a 5G Moto Mod, customers must either have an active Moto Z3 on their account or purchase a Moto Z3 at the same time as the 5G Moto Mod", Verizon said. We'll undoubtedly be hearing more about Verizon's 5G plans soon, so stay tuned for more, but in the meantime, head down to the comments section and let us know if you'll be signing up for Verizon's 5G service on April 11.

As the battle for "first to 5G" heats up among the Big Four wireless carriers in the United States, it appears Verizon is taking the lead. To start, it will only work with Motorola's Moto Z3 phone using a 5G add-on pack.

How much will Verizon 5G service cost?

Verizon, which plans to expand to more than 30 US cities in 2019, launched its first commercial 5G service in October when its 5G Home offering went live in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento.

The offer is available only on unlimited plans, which now start at $75 for one person without 5G. That means a single Above Unlimited line with 5G access will cost $105 a month with a $5 Auto Pay discount. Verizon started a 5G home broadband and TV service in parts of four cities previous year.

"5G data usage with the Moto Mod is unlimited with no data deprioritization", a Verizon spokesperson told Ars today. Even Verizon is using that careful language (it's also the exclusive U.S. carrier for Samsung's 5G phone for a limited time). That's not a bad deal if you're looking for quick access to 5G, as long as you're okay having to carry a huge Moto Z3 contraption in your pocket. Tough luck! You won't be getting 5G yet. If you want one, the 5G Moto Mod will go up for pre-order on March 14 for $50. Sorry. Verizon's 5G Mobility and 5G Home network are two different technologies that don't play nicely together.
