European Union commissioner: No-deal Brexit 'simply crazy'

09 Апреля 2019

May wants to delay Brexit only until June 30.

Dr Fox points out that a post-Brexit customs union agreement with the EU would be "not a meeting of equals" but where the United Kingdom market would be treated like a commodity by the EU and "We would ourselves be traded".

EU Farm Commissioner Hogan was setting out contingency plans in the agriculture sector for a no-deal Brexit to make sure that it impacts farmers as little as possible.

Such an extension would mean the United Kingdom having to take part in European parliamentary elections, which would be anathema to hardline Brexiteer Tories, and the country could be sidelined from budget decisions in Brussels.

The obligation for the United Kingdom to be a good partner emerged after Jacob Rees-Mogg, chairman of the European Research Group of Brexiteer Tories, said that Britain should use its powers "to be difficult".

The European Union hopes cross-party talks in London will yield a majority in the House of Commons for the stalled Brexit deal and is willing to grant more time to achieve that, the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said.

The legislation received final approval from the House of Lords and House of Commons late Monday. Parliament has voted tonight against the damage & chaos that No Deal would cause for jobs, manufacturing, medicine supplies, policing & security.

Conservative candidates have also been emailed to confirm the party "will be contesting" the European Parliament elections in May "due to the current situation".

The move came as the Government and Labour were holding talks on trying to break the Brexit deadlock.

Leader Jeremy Corbyn, has complained that May has refused to move from her original so-called "red lines', whereas he has proposed a permanent customs union with the EU".

The chancellor, Philip Hammond, and the shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, are expected on Tuesday to join ongoing talks between Labour and the government as they attempt to thrash out a compromise that both sides can support.

The Prime Minister's visits on Tuesday make it unlikely that any compromise Brexit deal thrashed out with Labour will be put before MPs ahead of the summit, with no face-to-face talks now scheduled with the official Opposition.

Lord Hague wrote: "It is hard in any case to see how carrying through the programme of Brexit procedures and laws could be sustained by an agreement between part of the Conservative Party and the bulk of the Labour Party - the Government would be highly likely to collapse under such a strain".

The Financial Times reported that the Tory party was rushing to line up candidates for the European Union parliamentary elections on Monday night.

It allows the government to seek any extension from 22 May onwards.
