Not all of NVIDIA's RTX features will be enabled, one omission being Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), as it would be too inefficient to run without the Tensor cores found in the Turing RTX GPUs. But the GTX cards are much slower with ray tracing, so the CPU used won't matter much there. Nvidia has no plans to rebadge its current GTX stock to make this update known in spite of it being an enormous upgrade. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, appropriately, confines its ray tracing to shadows. Basically, this technology renders illumination, reflection, and shadow in a more realistic looking way, while working faster and more effectively than past technology.
As for those aforementioned tech demos, there are three in all: there's the Mundfish-made Atomic Heart RTX tech demo, the Justice tech demo, and the previously-referenced Reflections, which was created by Epic Games in partnership with NVIDIA and ILMxLAB. We can also add the Quake 2 RT patch to the list, but that's still not a lot of options right now. It will also make use of Nvidia's DLSS technology. Now, owners of GTX 1060, GTX 1660, GTX 1660Ti, GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1080 Ti, Titan X, Titan XP can enable ray tracing in real time. Justin Walker said in a statement that, "With a 1080 Ti in Battlefield V you'd be able to play at 1080p, with RTX down from Ultra [setting]". These include the Star Wars Reflections demo, Justice, and Atomic Heart. The recently released GTX 1660 and 1660 Ti, as well as the Titan Volta are also included.
Announced at GDC 2019, NVIDIA has finally brought ray tracing support to several Pascal-architecture (older generation than the latest Turing-architecture) GTX cards. Fundamentally, it's a case of increasing the amount of DXR-enabled hardware. Have any of you downloaded the new driver yet? This will allow those with GeForce GTX GPUs to check out ray tracing as opposed to the feature being limited to the GeForce RTX line alone. Sure, the GTX 1060 performance looks pretty terrible in 3DMark Port Royal, but it's not that bad in Battlefield 5 with medium DXR.
Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Metro Exodus now support real-time ray tracing. So dropping to low might get you something a little smoother on the more demanding ray tracing games. Though the company does admit that performance won't be as good. That can be adjusted by the game developer for optimization purposes and is something we have recently seen happen with Battlefield V in the latest update. While these cards feature the Turing architecture, both are missing the dedicated RT Core silicon to augment the ray tracing experience.
